66 steering column

Has anyone rebuilt a steering column? Do you need a bearing puller? Can you just basic tools?

I rebuilt my manual column, including the lower bearing. New lower bearings are available from the vendors. Make sure the inner steering rod has not been severely scored or damaged by a failed lower bearing.

It doesn't require any special tools. Just stay organized.

I have photos of most of the reassembly. Just tell me what you need.

Lower bearing. Use a paper cone inside the lower bearing to keep the bearings in place until you install the race. Use lots of bearing grease too.

Re: 66 steering column

Mine was cut quite deep from failure of the lower bearing. If you can find a collapsible 67 shaft it can take the place of the 66 shaft.

Besides a replacement bearing an alternate bushing is also available. As mine is a 4sp I don't know if shift linkage would make any difference in the use of that bushing.
