Steering Shaft U Joint Question
When using these aftermarket steering shafts and U joints, do you guys drill a hole in the shaft to run the long set screw completely through? Also, does a hole get drilled through the steering column output shaft for a setscrew as well?

Re: Steering Shaft U Joint Question
I use steel Astro van joints factory attached to the DD shaft. I used the center slip joint section of a 74 Chevy truck DD shaft to get the length I needed. Where the astro shaft slips over the truck shaft I drilled and taped one side about 3/16 into the shaft. I installed the set screw to hold the shafts in place and spot welded the two shafts on each flat side of the DD. The u joints had 3/4-36 splines that mated to the steering box and column shaft I used.
If you are using Borgsen type joints here is a link to their catalog, look on page 29 for connection methods. http://borgeson.com/Images/100th_Catalog.pdf

Re: Steering Shaft U Joint Question
I used the aftermarket u joints. I drilled 1/2" in on the long set screw.

Re: Steering Shaft U Joint Question
I used a single U-joint DD on the original steering column shaft and DD shaft to the steering box and drilled all the way through(the widest part of shaft) for the long set screws, and just drilled a dimple on the flats for the short set screws to nest in.
I used blue Loctite to keep set screws secured in place. TIP:If you are going to grind/machine your flats for DD get wheels and steering wheel set straight and mark everything so you know where to put the flats or your steering wheel center will be off and you'll be seeing that every mile you drive.. |

Re: Steering Shaft U Joint Question
warrior is right on. A long screw is typical on a 1 d/d hollow collapsible shaft. It would go through the first wall completely and stop at the next. Short screws get a dimple drilled. Also, if you didn't buy that yet, I would not. You don't want to skimp on steering. I would use something like this joint. Good Luck!
