Question 292 Stock Exhaust Manifold

I'd like to restore my original exhaust manifold to its previous glory but can't seem to find any information on it. I believe I understand how the flapper works though I haven't ordered a new spring for it yet (figure I'll test it with a heat gun) but I'd like to be able to take that all apart and clean it which doesn't seem possible. In the two pictures I circled bolts that were in there (one came out, one broke off) and was wondering if anyone knew what was supposed to be in there.

If anyone has any information or better yet, any high res pictures of this header (as there appears to be several versions around) it would be highly appreciated!

Thanks

That should be the area that the choke assembly mounted...similar to this:

Re: 292 Stock Exhaust Manifold

On a Truck , nothing goes there. Trucks use a cable for the choke , Manual choke. Only cars used the automatic choke as VIN posted

Did you get the broken stud out yet? If you heat it up and then let it cool it will come out easier. If you can drill down the center of it an easy out should work. I like the short stubby ones with the reverse thread because they seem to be a lot stronger.

I think your 292 manifold might have a larger exhaust outlet that the 250 model.

Re: 292 Stock Exhaust Manifold

You can't take the heat risor apart. If it works freely & the shafts aren't worn much you are fine. Like the guys say those little holes are for choke stove. you won't need them with a manual choke. The light duty 292 manifold is the same as the 230-250. The larger trucks 1 1/2 ton up had a manifold with a larger opening for the exhaust pipe. It had no heat risor.

Re: 292 Stock Exhaust Manifold

Thanks for all the info! I haven't taken out the stud yet but was going to drill it out. I'm not sure if I'll stay with them or not as the gasket area is extremely rough. Not sure I could ever get a good seal. Unfortunately the intake is the same so while I was trying to save money and go original I might just have to go with an offy and headers.
