65' truck future 472 caddy swap

Hello forum I'm new here, recently I've purchased a 1965 gmc 2500 fleetside, I've got a 1968 caddy 472 big block that I plan to swap into the truck and just wanted to see if anyone else has done this swap before (I know they have, by no means is this swap new) and was just trying to get some advice, pointers and helpful knowledge to steer me in the right path to completing this swap. Thanks everyone for any info given in advance

I saw that posting too, sadly that truck already came with the engine when he bought it so it didn't really help me with the process of doing the swap

Board member Longhorn Man did one probably 10 years ago. I don't think he ever did a build thread on it though. And, he's not active on here anymore.
His was a 67-72 but it will all be the same.

This truck was also already completed when the thread was started. I haven't read through the whole thread but I guess there's lots of useful info towards the end.
Good luck. Nice to see someone who's not doing the standard SBC swap.

I saw he was the man to talk to and was sad to see he was no longer on here. The truck has a 350 in it now but it's going out! I'll go through his thread and see what all I can get from this. Thanks for the link

One of my friends in high school drove one of these trucks with a 472 in it. I don't know much about the swap as I was only 16 or 17 and it was 30 years ago but I always thought it was way cool. BTW the truck you have pictured has a chevy grill and hood, not trying to nitpick but there is a difference between GMC and Chevrolet in these years. Are you certain you have a GMC?

Yes it's a gmc with a Chevy grille that guy I bought it from couldn't find a gmc grille for it so he settled for the Chevy grille

I was going to this swap myself but the freshly rebuilt 472 I was supposed to get got sold before I could pick it up.
But here's what I remember IF I remember correctly. You need an oil pan out of a 472 to 500 CI inch Eldorado. The regular Caddys are front sump pans and won't work with our trucks.The Eldo pans look funky because they had to clear the drive axles. Another option I read uses the 368 oil pan. It will work with a 472 Caddy Motor but not a 500 unless you clearance the side of the pan with a BFH to clear the stroke of the 500 crank. The 368 is considered a mid sump pan but will supposedly clear in our trucks. You will also need the correct long oil pick up tube & screen to match the pan. You will also need the front oil pump off a 425 or 368 because the oil filter is moved to a different angle to clear our frames and they take a smaller oil filter. Of course you will need the 425, 472 or 500 motor mounts - the frame & motor sections. Any other questions or concerns please ask. It's been a while but I dug into this a few years ago.

Damn that does suck. I got my hands on a 68 472 and a th400 transmission, I do know I need to replace the oil pan because it'll hit thr crossmember, and i know I need to do something about motor mounts because mine won't work. I know alot of guys notch the firewall to get the engine to clear also. I will definitely message you because I have tons of questions Haha

I bought a 64 gmc with a caddy motor in it. they cut a big notch in the cross member to clear the oil pan, and they also trimmed the firewall a bit to clear the valve covers.

This was a very popular swap back in the day (I'm old), did a few of these . We took a BFH to the firewall, notched and boxed the front crossmember to clear the oil pan. Mounts were fabbed from a donor Caddy, not all that difficult. These torque monsters were perfect for towing our race cars. If you could keep gas in it.
