New to the ls platform need some suggestions

Ok here goes. I've got a 72 K/20 I'm in the process of restoring. My plan was originally to run thru the 350 and sm465 and slap it back together... well I happened on a 09 Silverado 2500 at work that's totaled. I bought the ly6, complete harness from the whole truck and the 6l90 for $100 total. A few things that had been taken from it to keep other trucks in out fleet running before I got to it include the ecm, tcm, gas pedal and throttle body. What are my options to get this thing swapped into my K20? I'm thinking about using the advance adaptors kit to bolt my np205 to the 6l90. What would you guys with more knowledge suggest I use to make it run? I'd like to keep it fuel injected and swap the cam for some more ponies before it goes in. I build engines for a living so the mechanical stuff is no issue at all for me, I just don't know anything about what's available (or exactly what I need) parts wise.
Thanks guys, Tyler

Re: New to the ls platform need some suggestions

Your going to need a ecm and tcm..for a throttle body you can go dbc and then you won't need the electronic gas pedal..if you want to keep the elec gas pedal you'll need a throttle and pedal that matches...you'll need to get a compatible ecm for that engine get it unlocked and all that..if your going electric fans that'll need added to the program..make sure you get the maf..and you'll need to ad a couple o2 sensors to the exhaust..one on each side..unless you enjoy pulling your hair out I would recommend buying a aftermarket harness for the engine..then you can get it setup like you need it..I'd suggest hitting the salvage yard for the parts you'll need..and when you get running get it dyno tuned..well worth the money
Btw..you stole that engine/trans..you may also have some driveshaft work ahead of you..I'm not sure about what you need for the trans..all mine have sticks..

Thanks! Ok so how do I know what ecm and tcm I need? Do I just look for them from another 09 6.0 2500hd?

Re: New to the ls platform need some suggestions

I'm not sure what you need for the trans..the one for the engine needs to be similar to what it came with..I've been told..crank sensors ,injectors and all that..needs to match the harness plug for ecm for sure..

Re: New to the ls platform need some suggestions

Well after a little research I believe I've got the tcm as it's in the transmission. I didn't see it with the wiring and just figured it got robbed over the last year or so since the truck was totaled. I've found a few Ecms from Silverados that came with the ly6 and 6l90 for almost as much as I paid for the engine trans combo haha.

Re: New to the ls platform need some suggestions

Do the throttle body and gas pedal need to come from the same truck? How do I know they will work with the ecm I get if it happens to come from a different vehicle?

Re: New to the ls platform need some suggestions

I'm not 100% sure but I think both would need to come from a comparable truck for ecm purposes....it would be less of a headache to go dbc...

I've been told by several people that its best when you buy to get a complete system

Re: New to the ls platform need some suggestions

What's needed for dbc? That would let me keep my stock gas pedal which is favorable to me.

Re: New to the ls platform need some suggestions

Just need a dbc throttle..I replaced the dbw on my 6.0 with a dbc from a 99 camaro..at least that's what was wrote on it...your ecm programmer person will need to know what your going to use and your harness will need built for dbc..I got a cable from a 03 chevy truck..the stock cable on my 81 was to short...

Re: New to the ls platform need some suggestions

You'll also might need a new cross member if it's a K...I also had to modify my firewall to allow the clearance for the valve covers. Drivers side was very tight. The 350's in the K's were very close to the firewall from the factory. I ordered the Dirty Dingo setup and it looks like a quality piece. I did an LS 5.3 4l60 into a '62 C10 and it was much easier than the K10...but this time I am keeping the TH350 and 205..in stock position..

Re: New to the ls platform need some suggestions

Thanks for posting a pic of that crossmember. I hadn't seen that one before only the pacific fab crossmember. I was planning on swapping it out but didn't mention it. I've done a little research and it looks like I won't be able to keep the vvt if I go drive by cable because the exams for drive by cable won't work with vvt. I guess I'll keep the drive by wire.

Re: New to the ls platform need some suggestions

I have dbc on mine and want to move to dbw. makes cruise control install simple (just wiring) and no bike cruise box and cable. Also gets rid of throttle cable for cleaner look. Something to think about.

I went with it because the centre section comes out with engine in place to remove the oil pan...and it looks cool.

Re: New to the ls platform need some suggestions

I'm pretty sure DBC isn't going to be a feasible option on a 2009 with a 6l90. The GenIV stuff isn't as pick about coming from the same vehicle as the older engines. You should be able to find an ECM and throttle body easy enough.

Re: New to the ls platform need some suggestions

That dirty dingo crossmember does look really good. good to know that's what it looked like I was reading. I got a 38 pcm on the way from another wrecked truck on eBay for $38 shipped to my door with a year guarantee from lkq or whatever that junkyard chain is. I'll get on a throttle body and pedal soon.
