What to do?

Picked up an 82 gmc, had an older dash pad and my bad didn't have the guy remove it to check out the vin numbers to the title, figured it would be ok as it had just run out on inspection this past Feburary. Well got it home and removed the old dash pad and noticed a few of the numbers on the vin plate aren't readable. Have any of you Pa guys ever had to go thru and get a replacement vin from the DMV, if so how much of a hassle was it and how long did it take to get it done?
