Confused
I purchased - what I believe to be a 1972 Cheyenne Super SWB over the weekend. The truck has all of the markings of a Cheyenne (inside wood grain, outside super markings, but the glove box has option n0. Z84 Cheyenne Equipment. The truck also looks to have factory air, PS and tilt, but no reference in the glove box - the truck is defiantly a 72 because the 5th digit is a 2. The other item that confuses me is the model description reads CE10734 - which researching on line shows to be a 1968 - The vin in the glove box matches the vehicle vin. Any clarification would be very helpful!

Re: Confused
A '72 Cheyenne Super SWB is a very rare and very popular truck.
It is also easy to 'replicate' with a few badges.....even easier when building it from several other trucks. Did you check the frame to see if this was an original short bed? Remember a few new badges and you will suddenly have what appears to be a 'Cheyenne Super'. As well, its easy to add options to these trucks included a tilt wheel, woodgrain dash, etc.....so this means these items may not be original...and that might not matter to you. There is a good chance it has been built from a different cab, doors, etc....this isn't uncommon. Regardless, post up some pics of it including the 'SPID' (sheet) in the glovebox and we can get you some more information. Welcome to the site!! Coley

Re: Confused
It’s possible that it’s misprint on spid. I’ve had several GMC’s that were Sierra and had Sierra Grande on spid. Both were original paint trucks. Does your truck have stainless sleeve on tailgate handle?

Re: Confused
I believe it's a Cheyenne that's had the super woodgrain on the dash and gb added (Z84 Cheyenne did come with woodgrain on the doors) - but it is an original swb truck per the SPID wb and model # and gvwr ratings. As far as "Super-ness", it's missing the stainless tailgate sleeve (not that that is definitive proof of anything - but is an oft-overlooked indicator). Vinyl seat is a giveaway if original (but it looks like in very good condition, so could be a replacement - it you think it's original, that's another indicator it is Z84 Cheyenne-only as that is a Cheyenne level seat cover only). Stock seat cover for a Super would be blue custom cloth (i.e. houndstooth). Can understand your frustration - but unless you paid BIG dollars or had heart set on a Super, that's a sweet original swb Cheyenne. CE10734 model # is correct for a SWB 1/2 ton 2WD (C10) fleetside with a V8 (and yours was ordered with the optional 350 upgrade).
EDIT: Someone DID go out of their way to add factory a/c - that's interesting (and tilt, and tach - so all this leads me to believe a po just upgraded to Super trim status and also added tilt +a/c in the process as well at the same time). Does the a/c look factory in the engine compartment? I wonder if an a/c dash was swapped over or if the holes were cut after the fact. Looks like they did a decent job! Excellent color combo. Dk blue not "that" common. Last edited by jocko; 12-04-2017 at 10:51 PM. |

Re: Confused
Does it still have the overload springs?
I have not seen them on a SWB before. I am not saying they you couldn't get them but most people that ordered them worked their trucks. LWB would be more common for the task.

Re: Confused
I agree, it appears you have a 72 Cheyenne SWB that has had the Super trim, tach, AC and tilt added.
It is a great truck no matter what.

Re: Confused
Regardless if it is a original Super truck or not. That is still a clean short box truck.

Re: Confused
I've seen both ways. I've seen Cheyennes with SPIDs that said Cheyenne Super but the RPO is Z84, which is Cheyenne, and I've seen Cheyenne Supers with SPIDs that said Cheyenne but the RPO is YE9, which is Cheyenne Super. Descriptions on SPIDs varied but an RPO is cast in stone no doubt info. A lot of people feel a truck has to be a Cheyenne Super to stand out as the best, or in your case maybe the P.O. didn't know enough to know it wasn't actually a Cheyenne Super.

Re: Confused
Thanks everyone - I really appreciate the information and support. My son and I are excited to start work on this project. I have attached a few pics of the AC - wondering if you wouldn't mind tasking a look and letting me know if you believe it's factory or not?

Re: Confused
Somebody did a nice job adding the factory air.
Run with it, you have a very nice project there. if you will go look at the SPID thread, it will give you a lot of insight on options, and how they were listed.

Re: Confused
One more note on Super-deciphering... A woodgrain applique on the ash tray pretty much screams I am not a Super. But by now, you knew that. Can't over-emphasize what you've heard on here - you bought a very cool truck and, fortunately for you, a PO did a VERY nice job of factory-correct upgrades. I'd keep em all and build your dream truck. I, personally, would resto it as a Cheyenne, but that's a personal choice of course. Either way is fine, and you already have the woodgrains for the dash - that's one of the good things about mods, once there's one, the others don't seem to "hurt" as much Ha, or at all!
