3 point seat belt in rear seat of Blazer??
Has anyone installed 3 point seat belts in the rear seat of a 1976 Blazer?
I want to still use the factory seat and would like the install to look as "factory" as possible. I have a 6 year old girl that will be riding in the back and want something safer for her. Any ideas??

Re: 3 point seat belt in rear seat of Blazer??
In to see what others suggest. I've been throwing around the idea of selling my C10 to get a Blazer since it is more family friendly for my two little ones, but have so far axed the idea for one reason alone: safety, or lack thereof.

Re: 3 point seat belt in rear seat of Blazer??
Later Blazers had factory 3-point belts in the rear, mounted to the top. Maybe 88-91 tops? I'm not sure of the exact years. Others have used third-row Suburban seats out of 00-06 models. The width is a good match and the seat belts are integral in those but you'll have to fab your own mounts.

Re: 3 point seat belt in rear seat of Blazer??
I just got a 91 Jimmy with the rear 3 point belts mounted to the top. They will be coming out soon to be replaced with lap only belts once I do a little research. I'm pretty sure my deal will be just installing the belt to the stock mounting location on the floor. but I'm not sure how they are mounted in the top.

Zook75,
Can you post a pic of how it attaches. I am not sure about attaching to the top on mine 1976. It seems that there would not be enough structure there to hold in an impact. The later tops must have reinforcement in that area?

Thanks. I assume this would require finding a different top.

I'll know more once I pull that cover off.
Where can I get the wrench to pull the bolts to remove the top? |

Re: 3 point seat belt in rear seat of Blazer??
As was said, you'd need the 90-91 top
GM placed mounting bolts right into the top's inner steel structure. It would be pretty hard to do it yourself and be safe. You would also need the 90-91 center belts as well as GM switched seat belt suppliers and the 78-89 belts won't work with the 90-91 shoulder harness. Plus think you need to add the outer male seat belt bolt mount to the floor next to wheel well. 73-77 belts bolted to the floor thru the rear leg of the seat if I remember right. Only real problem after that I can see is the armrest of the seat getting in the way of the shoulder harness. Might be able to use a 87-89 armrest? As for the switch to lap belts, unbolt the 3 point floor mount and bolt in the 78-89 male ends and use the matching 78-89 center belts. The shoulder harness uses same hole beside the seat in the floor as the earlier trucks. oh and the later top bolts are just torx T35H or T40H. Any parts store should a set of security torx bits. Thanks Irish. with all that said I'm in the market for everything needed to add the lap only belts. even if I never take the top off, I hate them things just hanging down on both sides.

Re: 3 point seat belt in rear seat of Blazer??
I used a universal lap belt kit. Bolted it to the floor on the outside with a 90* bracket and to the seat where the original center parts bolted. Done.

Re: 3 point seat belt in rear seat of Blazer??
I’ll have an extra set of rear belts soon, at least the pieces that mount to the rear seat. If you’re not in a big hurry.

Re: 3 point seat belt in rear seat of Blazer??
I just noticed my right rear 3 point harness is about torn in half. Can we still get the webbing and have upholstery shop sew it in? Or do I need to buy the whole thing? It’s blue.

Re: 3 point seat belt in rear seat of Blazer??
A later top would be the answer or possibly mount a roll bar for added safety and attach the 3 points to it?

Thanks Irish. Talked to them today and going to ship my assembly out on Monday. My local shop said they can sew webbing but can’t service the retractor part.

How do you remove the plastic cover from the overhead retractor. I don’t want to break it.

Re: 3 point seat belt in rear seat of Blazer??
I have to second 68Timber with the suggestion of using late model Suburban seats with the integral seatbelts.
An awesome example is tvblazer78's http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...3&postcount=47

No problem, I'll save them. I might be able to get you the anchor pieces that mount to the floor. I'll check.

If you have a roll cage put in with the seatbelts attached to it, that would be significantly more secure than anything that the factory ever made. |

Re: 3 point seat belt in rear seat of Blazer??
I'm putting together a 1990 GMC Jimmy for my wife and the 3-points were part of the problem. They had the roof mounted point, but she wanted to be able to take the roof off. Being as it came from the factory with 3-points it is illegal to run 2-point belts.
Best solution I could come up with - mounting mid 2000's Yukon Denali 3rd row seats. They have 3-point belts built in. I used 3/16" x 8" x width of floor plates under the 2 rows of mounting points - http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=755107 Works like a charm, have 3 seats in the row and has the legal requirement for seat belts. Suburban 3rd rows might be a bit cheaper, they aren't split like the Denali / Escalade (and maybe Tahoe?) 3rd rows |

Also be careful with any wheels spacers you use, My 75 pickup had 5 to 6 lug spacers on it, and a rear wheel broke off hours before i bought it. |
