Roll Pan Ideas

I have recently fabricated a roll pan for my 54 3100 to incorporate the exhaust tips into the look of the truck. I have an LS engine with a corvette upper end in the truck with C6 exhaust and I kind of wanted to hint at what is under the hood. I just finished fabricating mine but when I installed it it looks like it sits low and is too narrow. Any thoughts or ideas? I have photoshopped my taillights a bit lower and tucked to conceal the narrow ends of the roll pan but still not sure about it. I haven't pulled it out to get any better pictures than these. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I like the concept. Based on your post, it appears the photo on the left is an actual depiction. Either one looks good to me, but the right photo is more appealing. Anything to hide the rear gas tank. That is why I added a roll pan and a bumper.

That is correct. The first photo is with the roll pan as it is built and then the other 3 are photoshop to get ideas. The gas tank doesn't actually show from the back on the truck so I could do without all of this but then I wouldn't have the exhaust coming out the back. I would probably just turn down some tips and hide them.

Have you considered frenchin' the lights in ?
Also, what's planned for the lic. plate ?

my .02 worth would be to either leave the one on the left, that's cool, OR, can you cut off the top of the pan to raise it up an inch or two, and move the taillights to the top of the tailgate, for easier viewing. Something different

Not sure if this will help, but I extened stake rail to meet my roll pan. It's some work but it makes the roll pan blend in better. Here's a few pics...Jim

Thanks mongo! Those are the ones I am leaning towards too. I have also thought about extending the stake pockets. Fred that’s a good question! I have been struggling with the license plate placement a lot! Not sure yet but open to suggestions. My56, thanks I think cutting a bit off the top might help so that may be something I do no matter which way I go. I did want it to be lower in profile.

Jim that looks great!! It keeps the roll pan from looking so narrow! Maybe a combo of that and trimming it up a bit might work!

I fabricated some half bumpers that extended the stake tube, sort of, and used the pan for tail lights. They take up some real estate and IMO, make the roll pan look smaller.

I like post 1, right hand pic. the tail light is a little lower but not lower than the roll pan it sits next to. dunno what to do for the lic plate other than french it in along side the pipes. it gets pretty busy then though.

make sure those lights work good. sitting low like that will make them hard to see. wouldn't wanna get rear ended because somebody didn't see the brake lights.
there are also lights you can install into the ends of the box lip where it rolls under. near the latches. maybe a set [placed there and connected to the brake lights? they would be like the high mount brake light on modern cars.

So I finally had a chance to pull the truck out of the back with the roll pan on and I am starting to think I may just leave it. Probably paint it to match and call it good. I think the perspective I had before wasn’t able to see it as a whole. Thanks again everyone for your input!

It does look really nice Steve.
Did you come up with a tag plan ?

Maybe you could make the recess wide enough to put the tag in the center with 2 pipes on either side ? Would maintain symmetry.

I think the roll pan looks good as-is. Just blend in the stakes like oldman3 did.

My truck came with 3 screws holding the rollpan in place - now it's welded and smoothed in. Back up lights off an old transfer trailer. Bumper from a 60's Chevy C10, trimmed and flipped.

I think I would leave it alone but a couple of items I'd mention:

1) The taillights are pretty low so a 3rd brake light(s) higher up somewhere would be good.

2) Not sure where you would put your license plate. There's a fair amount of real estate between the cab beltline and top of the bed so maybe mounted to the back of the cab? I don't see anywhere on the bed where it would look good and symmetrical. Assuming the cooler is part of your bed, rotate and move it to the front and center of the bed and mount it on there.

not sure where you are but where I am you need a light for the lic plate. back of cab would suck for that. could be integrated into the cooler if you don't mind chopping that up. I could see a cop giving you a hard time if the cooler isn't part of the truck, that is to say, bolted down.
a high mount brake light is something to think about. maybe save your neck and truck one day. with everybody being a distracted driver these days you need to make yourself visible.
firefighter, go to rear ender wrecks all the time. neck injuries common. it would also be a shame to bust up a quality ride as well.

Here's my rear roll pan and the rear lights I put in. Obviously not a stock item, but I don't like the rear lights being so low. I also put on a 3rd brake light in the rear window. All LED and very bright.
