Progress: Back from the painter
I’ve been bringing pieces back home from the painter over the last couple of weeks. Dragged the tub and top home Tuesday... glad I got it done then. Beautiful day, sunny, 80 degrees... Today it's like 30 degrees and there's a half foot of snow on the deck.

That looks great, lots of work obviously has taken place. My K20 is in the exact same stage right now, well, except the doors and cowl aren't painted yet. Pretty exciting. Can't wait to see it all put together!

Gee Emm, It’s funny you should say that, because I said the same thing to myself when I saw your pictures! I lucked out with the windshield frame, but most everything else had to be replaced. I took it apart about 5 years ago. Guess you could say I’m not in a hurry…. Big J, If you follow the link in the fist post of this thread, you can find some real inspirational pics of the tub with no metal beneath the trim line… 72c5, I have to agree! The fun does start now… Got the body off the frame tonight. I’m totally psyched about diving into the next phase of the restoration… detailing the chassis. It’s been so long since I’ve done anything mechanical on this beast, I’m not going to know how to act! |

So Resto, that is awsome how high you got the body! I assume the nose has to come off to lift the body seperate from the frame? Could you have left the nose on if it were on from the paintshop?
Did you lift the body off using only the engine crane? |

I did use the cherry picker. First I lifted the front end and put some blocks between the frame and the body… then lifted the rear halfway… raised the front the rest of the way up and then the back end again to level it out. I originally lined it up to roll the frame out the front of the garage, but after I had the body lifted off I discovered it was just as easy to rotate the frame around the back of the scaffold on the roller skates. It’s working out really nice because I’m able to store all my resto crap and new parts under the body while I work on the chassis. You could… and I’ve seen guys lift the body as high as you need with the doors and front clip attached, but with the fresh paint, I would be too afraid of the body panels shifting and chipping the edges. Besides, in my case I had it painted in pieces. BTW, I could never have done this prior to all of the structural repair under the tub… it would have folded in half!! |
