Cab cart info needed

Hey guys,

I'm finally getting to the part of the disassembly of my 49 GMC where I need to build a cab cart/dolly.

I've found a couple online but I need some clarification on dimensions.

What size do I need to build this thing to support the cab properly?

I'm going to post a couple of pictures of what I'm after. The first one is what I want to build. Out of 2x4 as well as some harbour freight dollies.


The second is the AD Engineering one.

Ideas?

Welcome to the forum. Take a look at the projects and builds subcategory. Almost all of them one being used. I know there was one or two that gave a brief description, I'll see if I can find one for ya.

GMC Rodder, that's my picture you show of the 2 x 4 cart taken next to my shop. I will go out there and try to find the sketch I used for reference. Hope it won't take long to find and send before midnight This cart was built for my '54 but it fit perfect for my neighbor, Roger55, on his '57 pickup build as well. Clay

What ever works for you at a cost that you are ok with is good. I found out with mine that the too small wheels make it hard to move on gravel but I don't have my shop built yet. I used the middle out of a stock frame because I had one that someone had hacked up on the front end and it was scrap otherwise. That wood one looks like it will work great and might have other uses after you have the cab back on the frame. A few more pieces of lumber and you have a roll around work table that you can move anywhere you want to use it.

Had some pallets at work laying around, built the cart with one and scrap 2x4's HF wheels. Then stacked several pallets, rolled cab to them to roll cab over to work on floors.

Exactly why I used the heavy duty rubber casters. Kel

Thanks so much for the ideas. I might just attach my casters to a heavy duty pallet and call it done. Depends on how involved I want to get lol.

I seem to recall someone making a stand if not a cart from exhaust tubing that allowed the cab to be rolled over to work on the bottom. Think 2 ~11' tubes bent in the center at 90 degrees. Weld in some cross tubes. I've seen a similar rollover concept made from 2x4s and plywood for the rollover part.

Made mine long enough to roll onto lower firewall 45 degrees, 2 feet longer and could go to upper firewall and easier to work on bottom. Make sure high enough to get cherry picker under it (mine needed 8")-learned hard way and had to add blocks after these picks. Would use bigger wheels to roll onto trailer, etc.-these I had and will change when this cab is done. Sorry pics are sideways, I'm a slow learner. 38" wide fits right under cab.

I bought some discounted, culled 4x6 at HD and worked well. Whatever you use make sure you have enough clearance to roll your engine hoist under it (hind sight).

I might just attach my casters to a heavy duty pallet and call it done.

my kind of rigging
i used an old dish satellite mount that my neighbor had 4 casters on for his model T builds (back when satellite dishes were 10 ft diameter)
as for rolling on the back or firewall, ogre just rolled it on cardboard

Use casters with wheel locks. I didn't and it got very aggravating having to chase my cab around the shop while working on it, or wedging stuff under the casters to hold it "somewhat" in one place.
