Re: Power steering cooler
I'm running a Derale fan cooled unit in between my front rails. The hydroboost generates an unfortunate amount of heat and I was worried about cooking my fluid.

Re: Power steering cooler
Its the p-type/ham-can pump that generates the heat. Its a poor design. It over-assists and bypasses way too much fluid, thus causing the heat. That's why gm had to put the coolers on there.
If you have too much money (like I apparently did), get yourself a type II (car LS) pump and don't look back. I got my setup from Turn One and love it. They build the pumps to order and engineered to suit the application (vehicle weight, steering setup -rack and pinion in my case, tire width and type of driving anticipated). They don't over assist so they don't bypass all sorts of fluid thereby heating it up. Its like running a pressure washer with your hand off the trigger. The pump keeps bypassing and recirculating until the water heats up so much you cook and ruin your seals.

Re: Power steering cooler
I installed the stock 2500HD one that I had in the barn. My pump is a stock unit off a junkyard 1500 without the hydro boost return line. So far so good..

Re: Power steering cooler
I purchased a stock 2001 2500 hd p/s cooler, punched a hole in my core support, cut one bracket and bent it around 180 degrees and mounted on the forward side of the core support. I'm running a clutch fan, hydroboost mod, hydroboost ls pump, 85 c10 steering box, and a blend of various stock p/s lines. It really works well, no complaints.
