Anyone out there running a 261?

Hello All,

I was wondering if anyone was running a 261 in their trucks and what their opinions were of it? I have the ability to pick one up with a 4 speed. Was wondering if its worth looking at newer inline 6 options but this one is easily available.

I have not ran a 261 but I will say if you end up going to a newer inline six stay away from the 80s 250. They have an integrated head and you do not want that. I`m unsure of how many years and which years exactly the had those heads but I had one out of 84 c10. I have a couple 292 from the 70`s and I have not been disappointed yet.

Re: Anyone out there running a 261?

My old neighbor had a good 12 or more 261's sitting around. I never did the install but if I was going to rebuild my 235 I would have grabbed a 261 to put in its place.
If your looking for an easy engine to swap out a 235, I would go 261. If I remember correct you should run the 261 head, get the complete engine if you can.

What are you swapping?

I do have the opportunity to grab the entire engine, was just unsure what peoples opinions were of them. I know everyone is different in what they like. I did have a line on a 292 but sadly it fell through when someone else bought the entire truck it was in from my uncle.

I currently am without an engine for the truck. It is a 1960 C10. I do have the factory origional 235 sitting in storage but as the cab is going in for rust repair this winter I cannot afford to rebuild an engine at the moment and the 235 would indeed need a rebuild.
