Horn question
I had my horn apart several months. I think I put it back together correctly, but it does not work.
I think i have all the parts - see picture the turn signals and canceler work. when i press the horn, it moves in properly - i hear a clicking (the flat metal plate). the white piece with the pin in it seems correct, has a spring that seems to work as it should when i touch the metal cup to the shaft (like the crescent wrench in the picture), the horn sounds. The horn also sounds if i slide around the flat plate (picture) to the shaft. I also got the horn to sound once by pressing hard on the steering wheel itself, but that has not repeated. any ideas what is going on? Thanx!

From your picture, it looks like there is a lot of corrosion on the flex plate. The inner circle has to make a good solid ground on the steering shaft.
I don't know what's up with the horn honking when you jump out the center of the shaft with the cup. That part is isolated from ground with the plastic ring. Have you tried sanding off the portion of the steering shaft where the flex plate plate would make contact with it? I wouldn't admit it if I installed the flex plate upside down, but I've done it on the way to getting things to work. |

Check the fuses.

Thanx for response. I will try some sanding on the flex plate. It's not upside down because I can see the marks (in picture) where it has been riding on the cup, but it's the kind of mistake I generally make, so good advice.

That flex plate has a round hole in the middle. The edge of that metal hole contacts the steering wheel hub right next to the nut to make the horn honk. So make sure the under side of the flex plate, particularly the edge of that hole, is clean and bare metal, and make sure the hub of the steering wheel is bare clean metal where that edge comes in contact. The steering column shaft that sticks up through the steering wheel also needs good metal to metal contact with the steering wheel. I mention this because it looks like you have a grey paint and/or primer on that steering wheel.

I think you have nailed it, something has got paint on it. (sanding the parts did not help).
Here is a picture of the steering wheel. I did not think any part of this needed to be clean, am I wrong? Maybe the circle around the hole for the shaft? How about the inside part with the ridges that catch the steering shaft? Got it to honk again while pressing on the steering wheel rim! thanx

The area I circled all has to be sanded to remove the paint. |
