1947 Guages
I am switching over to 12v and, of course, the gauges are still 6v units. What is better/cheaper - replace the whole cluster, or get individual gauges? The chrome on mine is pitted, but I was planning on painting them anyway, so it's not a big deal. All I need are the Amp and the fuel guage, correct?

Amp guage doesnt need to be changed, does it?, oil pressure and temp are mechanical,. So I think your looking at fuel gauge only. 12v replacement fuel gauges are chaep
Dont foreget to change light bulbs. |

The bezel and glass are easy to replace too. Parts are available from the usual suppliers.

What is the black sealant stuff used under the glass? It (WAS) it a gasket, or some sort of caulk? |

I think that most of the truck trinket vendors have guage parts availble but this was easy for me to bring up.
https://www.classicparts.com/Gauge-Parts/products/851/ I'm thinking that "sealer" may originally have been the Bezel gasket.

If you are converting to 12 V on an otherwise stock truck you should be OK through the factory Ammeter. But if you have added a significant amount of electrical Accessories ( Electric fans, air conditioning, high-end stereo, etc) as well as a high output alternator the original wiring will not handle the The high amperage running through it.
