Vent Window Seals. . . Help!

Okay, I purchased a rebuilt set of vent windows form a member for my '74 build that is nearing completion. They looked great (new rubber, hardware, powder coated...).

So we are trying to get the vents installed and we are having one hell of a time. The seals do not want to fit correctly and the frames do not want to fit correctly.

I have looked over the seals and something is off about them. I purchased these in lieu of rebuilding mine because the price was right and it would save a lot of time.

As best I can tell, the weather seal doesn't look to be correct. It almost looks like a universal seal or maybe even the wrong year or something.

The outer lower portion of the weather seal, when the vent is closed, gets pushed inside the truck and pulls away from the door, creating a huge opening for water to run straight into the door and the cab!

What the photos don't show because the vents are closed, is that the outer lip of the seal is the same height as the inner lip and they are completely smooth... no indentation or change in the profile whatsoever. It's that thin outer lip that is getting pulled inside the door when the wing closes.

The lips are very thin and nothing like what the online images show or the old one I pulled out. The profile of the weather seal doesn't look anything like other seals online or like my old one. . .

The passenger side is terrible. The drivers side does the same thing but not nearly as bad. My old seals worked like they should; were just old and needed replacing.

Now I may be doing something terribly wrong but I don't believe that to be the case. Input is seriously needed!

I will upload photos of the Passenger and Drivers vents, then images of the others online and finally my old one. It may take a second post, but you will see what I mean.

Educate me, I need it!

The lip is supposed to go inside the door, not outside as shows in your pics

This is a pic of mine after rebuild and reinstall 2 years ago. The rubber meeting door frame is set inside.

As mentioned above, the lip of the seal goes on the inside. Your trying to keep the lip on the outside of the door, could be what’s causing all your issues.

Heading out to try and rectify the vent seal issue.

Is it safe to assume that the the inner lip also tucks into the door frame and not just the exterior?

Also, in looking over the passenger side, which is really bad, I noticed that the thick part of the seal that snaps into the vent channel is out on over half of the vent window, which explains why the guys couldn't get the window in and get everything to fit. Not sure if the vent came that way or if it happened when they were trying to do the install...

Given how everything ended with the shop, my bet is on the install.

Question: Can the seal be popped back into the channel without removing the entire assembly?

Well, got the drivers vent seal tucked inside the door frame. Not a lot of improvement in functionality. No joy on the passengers side as the seal is out of the c-channel on more than half of the vent window frame... so the frame will have to come out and the seal reset.

The passenger seal is seriously deformed for some reason and might need to be replaced.

HOWEVER.... I just re-watched the Precision Rubber YouTube video on repairing and reinstalling the vent windows. . . and they specifically said, more than once, that the "lip must go on the outside of the door frame."

Just what I need, more confusion. Guess a call to Precision is in the works for clarification.

The weather is rain for the next two days... so I won't be the vent frame out until it clears up.

Speaking of rain... tomorrow morning I drive 7 miles to the exhaust shop with open headers and possibly no windshield wipers... the clowns who painted the truck didn't mask off the wiper shafts... and painted over them! I can't get the wiper arms back on... until I scrape all the paint out of the grooves and I may not be done in time.

I just got back from the exhaust shop. They did an amazing job for $175. I couldn't buy the DIY exhaust kit for that price.

Yeah, I need to call Precision and let them know that their video emphasizes putting the lip on the outside and they need to clear up the confusion.

Just got off the phone with Greg from Precision. He said the flaps go on the inside to avoid the pucker. He is going to see what they can do to correct the video.

Confusion officially cleared up. . . on this issue

On to removing the passenger side and resetting the seal into the channel. . .. tomorrow maybe. Too much rain today.

Yeah I have seen the video before, and they do say that. Hopefully they can correct the video, because a lot of people do watch them, for the HowTo's.
