home made fan shroud
I got my RnD downflow rad for my 65 C10 LS project. The truck is at the body shop for paint so I'm doing odds and ends in preparation of its return. I want to make a fan shroud for the Spal electric fan. The rad has mounting holes in the corners for a shroud. I have no way to bend or weld aluminum so my plan is to use a flat piece of 1/8" aluminum and mount it tight to the rad. I think I'll put some foam rubber tape between to prevent any rattles. I've also got room to put 4 rubber flappers in the corners. I'll take some progress pics when I get going.

Re: home made fan shroud
I wouldnt put it flush with the radistor... you'll restrict air flow...it need to have a air gap all the way around...what I did was use a stock shroud and mount the alum plate to it ,,,with the fan mounted to that..I've got 1-1/2" - 2" of air space between the shroud and fan mount....

Re: home made fan shroud
This is the style of mounting my rad has with the triangular pieces in the corners to bolt to. I can see how the flat shroud would limit air movement in the corner areas. I could shim the aluminum sheet out a bit but how would I then fill the gap around the outside?

Re: home made fan shroud
You'll want it as airtight around the perimeter as possible...you want all the air ossible pulling thru the radiator ..and not gaps around the shroud edges....

Re: home made fan shroud
I found some 3/4" x 3/4" light aluminum sq tubing at Home Depot that I rivetted to the aluminum sheet to shim the sheet out further from the core and get full air entry over the whole core. The U clip nuts come really close to the core and I was scared the mounting bolt might hit the core so instead of a bolt I used a stud with locktight into the u clip and added a nut to hold the stud firmly in place. Then just set the whole assembly over the studs and fasten it.
