Windshield help please!!!!

So I got all new glass for my truck from auto classic city. New gaskets and trim molding as well. Had a buddy who’s roped in lots of windshields in a shop he worked at come by and help me. We worked on this damn thing for hours and can not for the life of us get it seated all the way. The bottom corners aren’t going all the way into corner and it seems like the top corners aren’t pushing all the way back to the pinch weld. My hands feel shattered from slapping this thing and I even resorted throwing elbows but we just can’t get it in there.
Is there something we’re not doing right? We used foaming window cleaner liberally to lubricate. He also put on some setting compound from a caulking gun that’s supposed to help it seal. We started by setting the bottom down then roping it around one side work that side in. Then moving to other side and working that side in. He also wanted to wait to put on trim molding until it was in. Is that correct? Any advice would be much appreciated. Unfortunately no local glass shops will do old schools any more.

Re: Windshield help please!!!!

I've heard folks having lots of issues with reproduction glass not being the same as original...could be the glass...

Re: Windshield help please!!!!

How supple is the gasket you got? On mine getting a softer gasket made all the difference.

Re: Windshield help please!!!!

Ok. Yeah I think we are going to pull it out and lay it in the old glass and see how the contours match up. Then we will also put the windshield into the truck with no gasket to make sure it fits. If all that is good we we’ll heat up the gasket a little and hopefully that will make it easier.

Thanks for the advice. Do you know who makes the softer gaskets?

Re: Windshield help please!!!!

Just put one in my 1956 GMC . Its a bear I was using glass from 56 , got the whole windshield in except top left ,one slap it went in and cracked. Got new windshield and Steele gasket .Took like 10 mins. in and done. Lots of soap and plam slaps and we tugged with windshield handlers ( suction cups) to get even not to hard to rope in

Man I’m so jealous. Yeah I have a feeling it’s the gasket. I dry fitted the glass and it seems like it should be a perfect fit. Did you put it in with the stainless steel molding or just the rubber?

Re: Windshield help please!!!!

Did you set your windshield in place without the gasket to establish a center and then mark both the glass and the body? Without doing that first it would be very hard to find the exact center when doing the final install with the gasket around the glass.
That's what I did and and it worked perfectly first time.

Re: Windshield help please!!!!

I got my glass from a local store named Angelo Auto Glass. I've bought several windshields from them to install myself for various cars. Took 2 days for him to get it in. He inspects thoroughly before even calling me that it's ready. One time he sent one back and got another because he saw something he didn't like.
He gives me a price that is only a little more than what I can get from the suppliers over the internet but he doesn't charge me any shipping at all so it ends up cheaper.

I did get the rubber from Brothers and I don't know what brand they supply but I had no complaints whatsoever with it.

Seriously doubt it's the glass. I bet it's the gasket. Did they send you Precision brand? Those are terrible.

Re: Windshield help please!!!!

test fit glass to opening
use new soft rubber
test fit new rubber, mark center
lube new rubber with dish soap or tire mounting slime around the outside lips, something that will come of with water and not damage paint
center windshield without rubber and use tape or grease pencil to mark the body and tape to mark the center of the glass and the center of the body
install the rubber on the glass
install a cord/rope in the lips of the rubber, around the outside of the rubber, so the ends overlap at the bottom of the glass
lay the glass/rubber/cord into the opening, have help.
have helper press firmly, but not point pressure hard enough to crack the glass, so the lips of the rubber can be "started" over the metal lip on the cab opening
once the lips are over the steel, have helper(s) firmly apply pressure while you pull the cord from both ends. slowly. the cord should pull the lips fully over the steel cab lip as the cord is pulled around the glass and comes out of the rubber. be careful with the pressure from the outside because too much will crack the glass, especially when the glass gets started into the curved area.
watch the video below, maybe help you.

Re: Windshield help please!!!!

Just a thought if you have the deluxe trim for your windshield it has to go in gasket before you install glass, don't know if this will help with fitment

Re: Windshield help please!!!!

Had a similar issue with my 55; had a buddy come over and we tried tag teaming it for 2 and a half hours. No Dice.

Tried again the next night by myself and i had it in within 15 minutes, no idea what i did differently but it literally fell right in.

i used the spray-away foaming glass cleaner, seemed to work the best and when it drys it doesnt appear to leave any residue or lubrication.

I believe brothers sells precision. I just bought the rear gasket for my truck from them and that’s what they sent.

I found a few for our trucks but they were all standard cab gaskets as in no stainless trim.

Yeah I dry fitted the glass and it looks good. The gasket they sent me is gold star brand or something. Pretty cheap so I took everyone’s advice here and ordered a Steele rubber gasket. Unfortunately though that has my truck down for at least another week waiting on that.
