New Problem... "fuel filter"?? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Mudder, thanks for your reply to my last post. The reason that I changed my fuel filter in the first place is, that Im getting my truck ready for some long hauls to Tx this summer. Last time I went, there were a couple times that my truck "studdered".. and so I thought I would just change it out. Prevenitive maintenience. After I changed the filter, I started my truck, reved it a few times and let it run for several minits. Well today I started to work and it just up and died on me, no studder no jerking, nothing. just died. I got off the road and she fired right back up, Air in the line mabey? I took a chance, got back on the road, it died at least 10 times with in 5 miles, a couple times she studdered first, I had to put er in N and fire up- while moving,,, was REALLY scarry as there was no where to get off the road. Finally made it to a church parking lot, called my sister, she came and followed me back home, My truck only studdered one time on the way back, then she ran just fine. What could possibley be the problem?? The ONLY thing that I did was change that filter.I know I have it in the right way and got everything back the way it was. Im at a loss

Is your fuel pump OK? Are you sure it's a gas problem? I think if your starvin the carb of gas, it wouldn't fire back up so quickly, as you would have an empty bowl that needs to refill somehow. I would think about it being an ignition problem.

^Do you have an HEI? If so sounds like when a module starts going bad.

When the fuel filter was changed you might have gotten dirt in the line that plugged the jets or some thing. If the filter went before the pump it could also show a bad fuel pump for what it is. When it studders and dies pop the air cleaner off and hit the gass peddle and see if fuel squirts from the accelerator pump? That might tell you if the bowl is empty(Starving for fuel). If you pull the cleaner and you smell a lot of gas the fuel bowl might be overfilled (clogged needle on the float) which could cause the same thing. Just a guess.

Ignition problem.

Jeepster is right, you'd probably have to crank awhile to refill the carb with fuel if it was a fuel problem. Also, when starving for fuel, they usually fall off while running rather than cut out.

to test the volume on the fuelpump disconnect the line into the carb put it into a jar or can and crank the engine for 30-40 seconds the factory specs is 1pint of fuel, for 30-45seconds of cranking. if you're not getting that volume you've either got a bad fuelpump or a glogged fuel pickup in the tank

I would check the wire that goes to the dist.Mine was acting the same way and it took me forever to find out what it was.I also had to change the modules inside the dist,sounds more like ignition then gas.Good luck.

I GOT IT!!! Was the STUPIDEST thing.

.. The new filter I bought came with a rubber gasket "thingie" that went all the way up inside the filter, inside that was a white plastic "thingie" and a small spring... The filter I took out didnt have this. I THINK that the pressure of the fuel was not enough to depress the spring "thingie" and let the proper amount of fuel into the filter. I just ran it about 10 miles, and she ran like a dream!! Was a small thing, but dammit, I CONQUERED it!!! HA HA!!!

Jodie , I was reading your post and I was going to say the same thing that you found. they make to style filters for the quad one has a paper gasket on the end ant the other has the rubber with the check valve . I work for Advance Auto parts and when I sell the one with the rubber end I always open it and do away with the check valve before the customer has a problem.

Every time I make one of these long trips, I always post it here on the board, and Ive never left home with less than a dozen numbers between Ga and Tx, to call incase of an emergency. Thankfully Ive never had to call for a break down, only a hurricaine (Thanks PapaNoel

) Having thoes numbers with me is one of the greatest piece of mind I can have... THANK YOU!!
