I am wanting to ditch the half barrels as fuel tanks. what tank is preferred.
does someone have a picture of the tanks inc unit installed? how much room is there between tang and differential if installed with spare tire crossmember remaining in truck?
where does the filler neck come out, how far forward, in the bed?
my rear is triangulated coil with shocks mounted to the rear of dif. taking up a few inches. I would not want to mount take where it had to be removed to service rear end..

I understand the mustang tank fits well and is a bit bigger but I don't think I can leave spare tire crossmember with it.

I used a Tanks Inc unit. It fit nicely, although if I had to do it again, I would mount it a little higher as I think it will be visible from behind. I am running an Art Morrison chassis, so your fit may not be the same.

I talked to tanks inc. They have a model based on mustang tank.. it has chamber for future EFI. And proper 5 hole for gm sender. It however would require rear support to move. I am working with a site vendor to acquire. More info to come.

Moving or replacing the rear cross member Is pretty well standard procedure when you do the tank swaps.

You would think that someone would be selling a bolt in/weld in replacement crossmember specifically but I don't remember seeing one.

Several of the guys have made them for their trucks and hopefully a few post detailed photos.

It isn't rocket science, you get a length of square tubing with the right dimensions and weld it or figure out how to bolt it in place moving it back far enough to clear the tank while not blocking access to the holes in the frame that the rear bumper brackets bolt to.

When I did mine way back when I used a piece of what look and may have been the track for an overhead door that rolled sideways with trolleys inside the track that I dug out of the scrap pile at work. It was free and the right size. I used a 20 gallon aluminum tank intended to be used as an auxiliary tank on my moms conversion van but works great on the 48. The capacity is nice on long road trips but 16 gallons is plenty unless you have an engine that drinks gas like a Key West bar fly goes though beer.

How many gallons is the tank?

The one pictured is not the one I ordered. It is 16 gallons and going back for the MU -HT?
I ordered the MU-2HT. Which is 20 gallons. The 16 can go under the crossmember. But I want 20 gallons. I will post pictures of how I am mounting it. It will be a week or two.. 2 jobs and bowling season.

As I await the 20 gallon. And the 16 returned. I decided to take some bed wood out. Then build a new rear crossmember. I will be cutting old one out.
I have not welded for a bit. Not too shabby. I used 1/8" plate to box the end of 2" #11 square tube. I slid it just inside frame rails. My bumper brackets will still bolt on.

what are you using for fuel lines?

slow progress. i ordered a different filler neck to get it coming straight up. i will then try to raise it an inch if can.
now i need to decide on fuel lines. input would be gladly taken. i have an old 283. so no electric pump, the tank has a sump so fuel injection is possible in the future.
the pick up tube bolts in where a fuel pump would g. it has 3 outlets
one to be used as a suction line to inline pump or block pump.
another to be used as a return.
the third has a bab end and is intended to be used for the included rolover valve/vent.
i am thinking running flare line 3/8 from both feed and return to a bulkhed at front of tank the return plugged off. and the vent run to same bracket and up as high as possible.
any advice on a preferred "not plastic" fuel filter. maybe mounted right there at front of tank. then what line from there to existing hard fuel line to fuel pump.
i am open to criticism advice suggestions and photos of yours
my goal is to do it once.. without costing too much. i want the tank easily removable.

I’ve just about finished with installing the stang tank in mine as well. Fits perfectly between the frame rails. Gotta figure out how I’m going to vent it.

Looks great. Wonder if this tank will fit the same in my 49 panel truck? Where did you get the Jag fuel filler?

Thanks. Not sure on the fitment on your vehicle. The dimensions are 32.6” x 24.5. I ordered mine from Advance Auto, Part No: 576-036. If you take advantage of their online discounts you can save some $$$. I only paid $58.43 shipped to my door. I got the the Jag fuel door locally, paid about $25 for it but they’re plentiful on EBay. I used the 16gal tanks inc universal unit and made a new rear crossmember and tucked it as high up as possible

i will post more pictures as I progress. I have the mounting done and painted. I made new fuel line bought nylon coated braided ptfe line and AN fittings from summit. have them built to join at old steel line. next I need to mount temporarily to fit bed wood around filler. the tank is as high as it can be. I spent $85 in billet filler neck, not sure I will use it billet does not look right on my ratty truck..
I an re doing and cleanly routing tail light wiring because with tank in it will be hard to access.

Finally finished it. Tank bolts in. I used summit nylon coated fuel line.
Not a huge fan of the filler neck. I mounted tank high. I had to trim the filler down a bit.
It lined up perfectly with the hole I drilled.

That 2x2 x1x8 tube will protect it.
THIS is much MUCH safer than the half barrels were.

Sending unit plug and filler neck removed you can slide it forward and drop it in your lap on creeper.
