Brake lines conversion tips
I’m working on a friends 1965 gmc. He still has the single master cylinder but it needs to be replaced along with his brake lines. I told him it would be best to swap to a dual master cylinder, disc brakes and stainless steal lines for safety if he plans to daily drive it. He doesn’t want the disc brake swap at the moment due to money but he does want a dual master cylinder. I checked brothers and inline tube and they do not carry dual master cylinder lines unless you are converting to disc brakes. The engine is in the truck so bending a custom line would be a pain. Would it be better to use 67-70 drum brake lines because the frames are the same? Or use the disc brake conversion lines with drum brake hoses. Thanks.

If hes gonna have all drums then you need a master cyl for drum brakes..
If hes gonna do a disc upgrade later, then he will need to swap the master to a disc/drum master cyl.. And the prop valve will need to match whichever setup he uses You dont have to use stainless lines though..but the lines wont matter which ever setup he choses..they just transfer fluid

True he will need 2 separate sets of brake lines...1 for front,,,1 for rear
But what I'm saying is the brake lines dont care what kind of brakes you have..they just move fluid...your either connecting the flex hose to a caliper for disc ,or a wheel cyl for drums...doesn't matter what kind of brakes you have.. The master cyl does matter....if he runs drums he needs a drum/drum master cyl If he switchs to a disc/drum setup he'll need a disc/drum master cyl... I gather your looking for brakes lines that "fit" the truck...but parts stores carry premade brake lines that you can bend to fit...if you need them cut to a specific length a brake shop can cut and reflare the line for you if you dont have the tools...I have my own flare tool...I buy the long premade tubing from oreillys and a handful of threaded fittings and build my own....

I would use a '67-'70 C10 master cylinder as well as the lines. The '67-'70 drum/drum trucks do not have a proportioning valve, just a block with the pressure switch in it.

On my 1966, I converted to a manual dual port system. I rebuilt the drums and used a new master cylinder for a 1967 truck, no prop valve; and bought a new stainless line kit from Inline Tube (P/N CTB6607) , to my knowledge this is still the only manufacturer of a 64-66 dual line conversion kit.
I have used this current setup as a daily driver and weekend hotrod 9 months out of the year since 2014 and have had no problems. Hope this will help aid your decision, good luck! Last edited by SidsChopShop; 02-21-2020 at 11:21 PM. |

Easy: 67 C10 drum/drum non power master. Use the original single line down, split that line to the front brakes (on the FRONT port of the master). Use a one in/two out block here. Run a new line from rear port of master to the original rear line, using the appropriate union. Under 50 bucks, even if you use a pre-flared line.

I did my 65 just like Jayoldschool said and it works fine. I am sure power disc would be great but at the time money was an issue.
