Tail Gate chains and securing

So during this lockdown I have been working on my 58 fleetside and i am confused and stumped in regards to the tail gate fastening and chains.

As per pictures 1&2 below I have found the tailgate chain bolt and mounted it into the rear wellside panel above the taillamp. When I run the chain to the tailgate I can let it sit flat how ever you cant close the tail gate and the chain is in the way...

If I mount the chain to the outside rear hook the tailgate (pic 3) the tailgate wont lay flat but will close.

I can only assume they want you to move the chain from the outside to the side mount when opening and reverse when closing ???

Also .... what holds the tailgate closed normally.... When the side pin (pic 4) goes into the rear upright there is nothing to grab it.... am I missing a part or being totally dumb...

Well that makes sence... duh...

I knew my 3rd pic was wrong but it was the only way to get it to close but then I couldnt figure out how the gate stayed closed (thought I was missing something).

I see no that you unclasp it and then use the one on the side to hold it level.... so simple I overlooked it

THANKS A HEAP
