Personally I don't like the looks of fender welt. I issue 3M strip caulk in between the to mating surfaces. This stuff stays pliable and is easy to apply..

I used contact cement on both the welt one side and the fender.

How thick do you use?, do you let it stick up any?, Got a picture of it installed on the truck?

I would think the bead would hide any imperfections in the body panels joints.

not sure where mine came from.
i used quarter inch wide double stick foam tape to stick it on the fender
welt was not oem on tf trucks, but there were gaps between bolts during mockup
i like the looks of it, no slip or movement in 10 years i've had it on the road

I used color matched welt on mine but the paint guy put it around the fender AND between the fender and side step. Of course it didn't stay in place and looks bad now. I've been thinking I need to loosen the bolts and reposition it using maybe a dot of hot glue here and there to hold it in position.

BUT, I think I like the idea of taking it out all together and using your approach. Is this 3M stuff a Lowe's/Home Depot item or an automotive paint shop item?

3 M strip calk is a part house item . It is a package of foot long strings of very pliable calking material. I used to use it to hold alignment shims in place until I tightened the A frame bolts when I was doing front end work. https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/company-...3194020&rt=rud

I used some double back tape to seal my windows on my boat that might work but it sticks pretty hard.

3m strip caulk is non-hardening, we used it for plugging firewall holes in buses
3m double sided foam tape fit above the fender bolt holes
allowed me to attach welt to fender as i cut out for bolts

Guys....I'm interested in the 3M™ Strip-Calk. I'd like to fill the fender gaps on my 49 pickup. Can this product be applied without removing the fenders and will it clean up without any damage to my paint?

strip caulk is not for that use
you'd be better off using latex window caulk

The strips are about 3/16" - 1/4" thick about 8" long. I just added a few strips end to end to cover the contact surface (in the middle of the fender flange) of the fender. One you tighten the fender it squeezes out. I most cases it does not squeeze out past the fender but it if does just take a bondo spreader or rag and wipe it away. I don't have any close up's but I used it on my 48 that I sold last June.

Good to know. I used it on my truck for the 7 yrs + it was on the road and had no issues. It stayed playable. I think this stuff is intended for multiple uses. I bought more to use on my Suburban build.

I personally hate the way welt looks, so I would rather not use anything over using that stuff.

Everyone has there opinions tho.

DOH, I somehow missed that. Concentrating on the Suburban only now? I won't ask what you sold it for - it would never be enough but can I ask where you listed it for sale? eBay, Craigslist, here, other? Just wondering in case I ever decide to sell mine.

It was time Dan. I didn't drive it enough with my family of 4. Plus the $$ can be better spent on kids college funds. My sons are 13 and 15. I think I did good on the sale price. I didn't advertise it. My friends that own the Hot rod shop passed my info on to someone that was looking. Since I really was not actively looking to sell it, I just named my price and I shot high. I knew with the sale, I could help the kids college funds and get the Suburban on the road in about a yr.

I totally get it. Family always has to come first. I was teasing you of course. Very glad you shot high and got your price.

It has occurred to me to sell mine. I haven't finished the upholstery yet but I can get that done soon. I think wanting one done, going through the process is so rewarding, getting it running and looking great is all the fun. Afterward owning and driving it is fun too but not AS fun, at least for me so far.

How goes the Burb?

Same here, strip caulk seals the gaps, protects from metal to metal contact and prevents squeaks without the unsightly welting. I used it anywhere body panels bolted together.

Yes, I enjoy the build process. The cleaning of a nicely painted truck.....not so much. The Suburban is picking up speed. Check out my build thread...
