Should I get a new carb or run the old one?
I have the stock 1bbl. Not sure if this one is up to par. Are there better carbs out there?
I have a 1963 C20, 4 speed, 292 straight six. Posted via Mobile Device Last edited by Asshat; 04-28-2020 at 02:25 AM. |

Re: Should I get a new carb or run the old one?
AFAIK your carb bore should be the same as the manifold. If it is smaller you have a carb off a 250 or smaller. Got manual choke? We had a 67 1 ton 292 and I don't remember manual choke on it but could be wrong on that. I do remember the manual choke on my 66 250 being a pain because of the constant adjusting until it warmed up. Aside from this I think you will go to a lot of trouble getting a different carb set up properly.

How does the engine run? Rochester B carbs can be OK, depends on how worn out they are. It's possible to clean out and rebuild them, but if the throttle shaft is worn out, it won't help.

I'm a big proponent of running the OEM carb, and self-rebuilding. You'll probably do a better job than the person making a few bucks an hour rebuilding crappy cores.

1bbl? F that. Even a 2bbl would be an upgrade. A 390-500cfm 4 barrel would be a great option as well.

Re: Should I get a new carb or run the old one?
They make 1-2bbl adapters but they are still limited by the manifold. Get it running, then look at a manifold and carb. Not cheap to upgrade, need about 450cfm and those little carbs are expensive. Rochester 2bbl are good but hard to find air cleaners. Holley 2bbls are not bad either, watch the CFM because they are rated differently.

Re: Should I get a new carb or run the old one?
I have a Carter WCD 2 barrel on a Rambler 232 and it works well. There are also other Carter two barrels but I am not familiar with them. Motorcraft 2100 and 2150 are known good carburetors if you would dare to put one of them on. If you had a spare intake manifold you could experiment with opening up the bore somewhat and matching it to a 2 barrel adapter.
Looking at the bare head one would think you could chuck the intake manifold altogether and try adapting three side draft carbs to work. |

Re: Should I get a new carb or run the old one?
The Rochester B has a few things to look for if you rebuild it, first is worn throttle shaft, if you can actually see wear, it's pretty much junk.
Second is the top plate warps and leaks fuel. You can fix that one with a big sheet of sandpaper unless it's really bad Third is multiple issues with the accelerator pump. The check ball has to be in place, the linkage has to be right, and the little hole that jets out the gas from the pump can't be clogged. A 292 should have a 71 main jet. Good luck. Edit: 71 main jet, not 91. Brain fart.

Worn throttle shaft bores can be reamed and sleeved. If the shaft itself was worn it too could be repaired. Worth it or not, maybe, maybe not. |

Re: Should I get a new carb or run the old one?
IF, IF, you get another carb, stick with factory type you have. Fiddle fart'n around changing all kinds of stuff for a minimal gain in airflow though the engine, is not worth the trouble...to me.
I'm pretty sure there are NO new carbs available for your engine (anyone know of any???). Buying a reman carb can be a gamble. If you buy a reman carb DO NOT trade your old carb in, just in case. Pay the core fee and keep the old carb! just in case... If you want to rebuld your old carb, I know a source for the best quality kit, call the "The Carburetor Shop" in Eldon, Missouri. Guy that owns shop name is Jon Hardgrove. He only takes orders on Mondays and Tuesdays, over phone only.1-573-392-7378. He does have a website, but only does orders and any communication via phone calls. He sells kits for all makes of carbs. Your throttle shaft is worn, without doubt. You need to install bushings in the baseplate. Source for that is Cliffshighperformance.com, He is A Quadrajet expert. He sells these kits that include a special drill bit and bushings to repair your carb base plate. Go to his website, he has pictures of all his stuff. I don't think Jon sells the bushing replacement kit... |

Re: Should I get a new carb or run the old one?
I was lucky enough to find an NOS Holly economaster for a 250 that I have. I could not rebuild the monojet and make it work for me. I tried at least 3 times and couldn't get it to work right. I can rebuild quadrajets with no problems. I finally threw in the towel and bought one. It does work awesome though. I'm glad I bought it. I doubt there will be another one for sale but if you ever see one snag it.
