I’m changing the stock exhaust manifold to headers and I need help finding a stud/bracket that will allow me to bolt up my AC. This is on a ’81 with a 350. I’ve had them before on another car but I got it from a friend. It looks like a normal stud with threads on each end. In the middle, it is much thicker to hold down the header similar to stacking about 10 washers on the stud. (something I will not do.) This is to compensate for the gap that the 2” manifold leaves when you put in the 1/4 “ thick header.

I've seen those bolts at the parts store in their "Help" section. Most places don't have a way of searching the stuff located in that section, but you should be able to find them.

for one you have to cut a tab off the A/C bracket to get the headers to fit. the power steering bracket needs a spacer, but a small tube/pipe cut to length will work just fine.

the spacer and the nut that i'm using on it came from my work. i work at a hardware store

so i get to find all the spare nuts/bolts i need

the stud is just the stock stud that came off my old 305 when i put headers on it.

I didn't need a spacer on my 85 when I put headers on my 350, I have an older model 350 though and have no clue what year the brackets are, I need to buy some correct brackets for my year and a pulley. I will need to figure out how to mount the A/C brackets also since I will be installing it on my truck.

i couldnt get erics link to work... but at anyrate i took the pics and will post them on wed night. though i am sure eric could come up with pics of the bracket sooner... btw i am not running AC at the moment but i did take pics of the bracket.

ocbaud: are you saying I should be able to get a spacer at THe Home Depot and use my old stud, off of my 305? Im also doing a 305 to 350 swap.

what i did, since i wasnt putting my compressor back on just yet there happen to be a spacer between the AC compressor and the mount, it was almost the perfect length, i only had to add like 3 washers.... you could use that when you go get a spacer.. it may take a bit of trial and error... if i remember correctly Eric, didnt you have to do your twice? or am i just the village idiot?

Here is what I used on mine to get the power steering pump off the exhaust mount for future headers.

All you need is a piece of galvanized pipe for a spacer. I used 1/2" ID. Anyway, the length will be the thickness of the exhaust manifold, less the thickness of the header flange. So, say the manifold is 2" and the header flange is 3/8". the spacer will need to be 1-5/8" long.

Dave (LOHRTBT) should remember this, as he almost decapitated me with a sawall.... i wasnt worried as much about looks as i was getting it off of there. instead of the square cut like we did you could round it in an attempt to follow some of the contour of the mount. but this should give you and idea of what you have to remove.

Brandon (79Big10) should remember this as well... same day my whole exhaust system fell on his head/face.

ahh yeah... the good ole days.....
