Re: What is this under the truck?

Wasn't that something old hot rods had so that you could have straight pipes at the drag strip but mufflers on the street? I wasn't around back then, so I don't know for sure

Re: What is this under the truck?

You know, I was thinking that a little after I posted. I think you may be correct.

Re: What is this under the truck?

Yup, "cutouts", and I am definitely old enough to remember them. I remember when the '70 GTO came out, there was an early commercial touting cutouts on them. That got a quick kibosh by the gov, as the control was dash-mounted, thus unlawful.

Here's the commercial for "The Humbler".

I remember that commercial.
That was a vacuum actuated baffle on the mufflers: http://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2016...t-cutouts.html

Re: What is this under the truck?

Exhaust dump is the term I remember, I had those on my 68 Cutlass BB 4 speed. Shot flames out on start up!

Re: What is this under the truck?

Comment from another whippersnapper. Just think, one day the current dodge commercials are going to look just as dated. Especially the brotherhood of muscle ones.

Yup! Crazy, right? Those factory guys secretly testing their mules on Woodward Blvd back then weren't too concerned about other state's laws.

Re: What is this under the truck?

had them on my 56 chevy and like clyde65 said we called them dumps. They didn't stick out like the pic. I had them on a 327 with 2 1/2" ram horns right at the curve (pain to remove the caps) was the car any faster, probably not. Sure thought is was at 17 back in 66/67.
fun times, we went in a straight line not donuts!
