tire sizes and 1 piece driveshaft???
hey guys, what do you know even in the middle of Iraq I am still scheming about my truck! I want to put 265/75 r 15's on it. but I don't know if they'll fit. I'm getting new rims too so any suggestions on backspacing or whatever would be great. my truck is a 69 6 lug rear 2 wd w/coils.
the next question is about the one piece driveshaft. how do you get around the crossmember. do you add another brace in there and cut the bottom of the hole out? I want to put in an overdrive and then possibly a 1 piece cause with a 2 piece I would have a chunk of DS 1 foot long or so and then the rear DS. link to the OD. http://www.drivetrain.com/new_overdr...spdmanual.html thanks Nathan & Tiffany

Remove the old driveshaft and carrier bearing stuff and slide the new 1 piece unit right through the crossmember and bolt it up.
There is no need to clearance anyhting concerning the crossmember. From stock height all the way down to 7 inch lowered, there is enough room in the crossmember that the driveshaft has plenty of room.

What size gears are in your truck? A friend of mine has access to a '69 2WD rearend. I have a 2WD 3/4 ton Suburban with an Eaton Rearend.

the gears are 3.73's in a corporate 12 bolt, long housing. but i'm curious as to why the gears matter?

Thanks, I was curious because 3.73s are what I want. I plan to swap in a 700r4. Is it a 5-lug or 6-lug? What engine came in it originally?

265/75's are only around 31" so yes they would fit....

The truck was originaly a 292 inline six with a ch465 4 spd manual tranny. The rear axle is a 3.73 6 bolt unit. Most of these trucks that were 2wd either had 3.73's or 3.07's. almost all of them used the corporate 12 bolt. Any 12 bolt truck carrier will fit in them. if you switch between 3.73's and 3.07's you have to change the carrier too. they also used that same 12 bolt axle until the mid 80's, 85 or 86 I think. they are all the same. there are some differences in the housing. the 70 and up housing is longer from wheel to wheel by about 1.5 inches that means that the axles are also longer by about 3/4 in. Therefore you have to use long axles in a long housing. You can put long axles in a short housing but you have to make a spacer for the break backing plate. That's most of it but if you have any questions just pm me. I'll respond but it may be a day or two cause I'm on the other side of the world in Baghdad.
Nathan
