Install of 292 Inline 6, How to Deal With Engine Mounts
I'm about to install a "refreshed" 292 into my 63 C10. I am looking for advice on how to deal with the engine mounts and perches. If I bolt the engine mount (with rubber) to the block and the perches to the frame, it looks like an almost impossible task to get the single bolt in that connects the two together as the engine is lowered. (That bolt is inserted from the bottom and you won't be able to see the alignment from the top.)
Do people bolt the mounts and perches together onto the engine before installation, then drop the engine in? At least then, you can see the holes in the frame to align the perches as the engine drops in. You could leave the bolts a little loose to allow some fudging room. Looking for someone who has BTDT. For those bolts I’ve ground a 45 degree bevel on the end of the bolt. Clean the threads with a tiny file.

Is your transmission still in the truck? I swapped engines without pulling the trans. Once the clutch splines lined up to the trans, the engine fell into place and was very easy to run the bolt from the frame stand to the rubber mount

I installed new mounts on mine and reinstalled the perches on the engine and the frame mounts remained and the engine settled down and the holes lines right up. Worst case leave the hoist on the engine and lift it just a tad to see the bolts though.

Thanks guys, sounds like the consensus is bolt the frame perches to the frame, bolt the engine perches and the rubber mounts to the engine. Then drop engine in place. I'll leave the frame perches a little loose so position can be adjusted.
As TJ said, I'll leave the engine up a little off the frame perches to be able to see the alignment, then put the bolts in. |
