1974 Front end grill headlight assembly
Hi All
I picked up a 74 K20 last week. It has 1980 headlights and bezels. I love the round eye look so I want to take it back to stock. What do I need? What is wrong with this picture? Seems like its missing metal above the turn signal. |

Re: 1974 Front end grill headlight assembly
Wow!!! Hard to tell from just those two pic's, however you got some work cut out for you to put it back to 74. Alot is going to depend on how professionally this update was done? is it a weekend hack job? or was it done by a shop? Also do you have a complete 74 grill/bezel's/trim/with all the correct hardware? It can be done, but it depends how much time/labor and money you want to put in to it? Grill and hardware is different, headlight bezel's and chrome trim is different, 74's had amber park/signal lenses.
Best thing is to remove all the front face, see if there is prior front damage/rust/alterations to supports and brackets. You can obtain original parts or repops, but be careful mixing the two for fitment. Also I don't believe you will increase the value that much, if it's more preference and originality. I would seek out someone who has already tackled this job for advice, as well as seek out using original parts vs reproduction and costs? hope that helps. Good luck! |

Re: 1974 Front end grill headlight assembly
If your not worried about being year correct, and want to keep it simple and inexpensive, then all you'll need are 79 bezel's and headlight's with buckets, not sure if the square bucket springs will work, or if you need to switch the headlight prongs back to 3-way? anyway it should be simple to do yourself, hopefully you can find an inexpensive set of bezel's, there unique to 79 only. Keep us posted!

Re: 1974 Front end grill headlight assembly
Do you have a picture of the rest of the truck? Are you certain it is a '74 with a '80 front clip added?
The 1980 only V22 square headlight pieces are sought after as they were only available in 1980. As was already stated if you want to go with a '73/74 grille you'll need different grille brackets for the radiator support, the side and center supports are different as well. Headlight buckets, bezels, turn signal lenses, lower grille trim and the grille are all different than what you have currently.

Re: 1974 Front end grill headlight assembly
You need a new lower valance, as that one was cut, and headlight surrounds. The turn signals aren't in the headlight surrounds on a 74.

Re: 1974 Front end grill headlight assembly
The easiest as you stated is to switch to 79 headlight set up. Just switch headlight buckets, bezels and marker lights. Although if you are going to go through all that trouble maybe you should just consider keeping the 80 stuff. Good luck
