original transmission & T case colors?
Working on my 72 and it has a Saginaw 3 spd with Dana 20 t case. It kinda looks like they were not painted at all originally. Does anyone know for sure? I have done several searches but must not be wording it correctly.
Thanks

Re: original transmission & T case colors?
My 70 has the Dana 20 but 4spd. The case looks natural with silver output and pan covers.
I do not believe it has ever been removed, but she sure do leak! |

Re: original transmission & T case colors?
Thanks Mike. I am starting to think both the transmission and transfer case were just natural. After getting them both cleaned up, I can't find a spec of paint on either one. I think I am going to put a coat of cast iron gray on both so they won't rust. I don't care for the clear coat ideas. Leaks are what made me pull everything apart. Got new gaskets, seals and bearings from Rock auto. Definitely out of my comfort zone but I think I can push through with it all.

Re: original transmission & T case colors?
I think the 4 speeds got the indian red paint (like red primer) but both of the 3 speeds I have sitting here look just like the dana 20 cases with no paint

I'll be in the same boat, should of did it over the winter, but would of been a "while I'm here situation" turned can O'worms apart for summer.

Re: original transmission & T case colors?
Your right, I believe it's the same color they use on the interior case of the 4 speeds.

Re: original transmission & T case colors?
Be careful pulling the dana apart, if you do. There are 48 individual needle bearings that fall everywhere when you punch out the center shaft
