Is this a fair price for a Posi install?

I called around today about getting an Eaton Posi put in my truck. I can get an Eaton Posi for $350 from West Coast Differentials. Then get an install kit for $100 from Summit. A local shop quoted me $300 to do the job, and they could have it done in a day. Does that sound fair?
On a Side Note...The Detroit TrueTrac that I ORIGINALLY wanted ISN'T made for a Series-3 carrier (damnit!).

I'm not 100% sure but sounds really high to me. I paid a mechanic to do mine for like $100, then again he works out of his house so go figure?

Hmm..It was the first place I called actually...I was expecting like $1000 to install..when I heard $300 I was like YEAH!! I may call around some more.

I paid $350 to have mine installed, and that was 7 years ago. So, I don't think that price is too far out of line.

Is it easy to get sideways with the Eaton? I mean, I'm buying it to GET traction..but with Radials on, I'd like to be able to get sideways easily

the shop that is setting up my ring and pinion and putting my locker in is doing it for 175

When I had my Auburn Gear differential and Richmond 3.73's installed, it was $160.00. This was a pro mechanic working out of his engine building shop. Are you having gears installed at the same time?

Well, the $160.00 was with me carrying the rearend to him, out of the truck. Everything was cleaned up and ready to go. He installed everything and even bought new axle bearings that I forgot to get. I imagine if it's still in the truck it would be higher. Not much to installing the posi unit. Setting up the gears is what takes time.

I should clarify I guess, mine was $350, but I forgot to mention I changed gears too. I brought them two twleve bolts, mine (unknown gear and non posi) and the other 12 bolt (from a 67-72 I believe, and it had the 4.10 and posi). I installed the diff assembly when they were finished.

I put a zexel-torsion in my S10 myself. If you just installing the posi, its a R&R deal. Get new bearings put on it before you start. Its easy, just put the shims and bearing caps back on the same side. I did this when it had about 10k on it, I now have 96k and no problems out of the rear. I had never even seen the inside of one before that. I've helped do a few more, and a couple of the guys bought the install kits to make the gears mesh better, but we always ended up reusing the stock shims, they made the best pattern.

The detroit true-trac is the one with gears and all like the zexel right? I was wanting one of those for the '78. Are my 3.08's a series 3?

two words... LOCK RIGHT. just a lunchbox locker, which replaces your spider and side gears and you dont have to disturb anything else.

Doing a posie without changing gears is not hard on a corp axle. You not having to touch the pinion depth and that's where it becomes a pain.

Go buy a dial gage from Northern or Harbor freight. Check the run out on the carrier. Check and wrte down the gear lash. Get you new posie and new bearings and have the bearing pressed on. Play with the shims till you get the same lash. Make sure it goes in TIGHT with the shims. Tapping it in with a rubber mallet is not a problem. New bearings need a little preload. Your done.

I can't give you a price, since I had a complete posi. rear-end built.

Yes, you will be able to get sideways easily w/ an Eaton!
