Wiper washer motor or switch?

I replaced the factory washer motor with an electric one years ago and it always seemed to need to prime before it actually started working which was a bit annoying. The first motor went bad and I replaced it with the same one from Classic Parts. At first it worked the same as the prior one but now I can’t get it to work. When I push the wiper/washer switch to activate the washer I hear the motor start briefly then stop. Each time I repeat this it starts then stops but never runs long enough to prime or pump fluid. I checked the wiring and all looks good. Has anyone experienced this? I’m thinking I need a new wiper/washer switch but not sure.

Re: Wiper washer motor or switch?

So, you probably have one terminal of the washer motor to a source of 12V+ power, and the other terminal goes to the switch, which connects to ground when you push and hold the button, is that right?

It seems you could determine if the switch is causing your problem by simply bypassing the switch and connect the washer motor ground terminal directly to ground, and see if it only starts briefly and stops. If it does, then replacing the switch is not going to help. If the switch is indeed causing the problem, you can take it apart and clean it with DeoxIT or WD-40.

Or, snag an S10 res with internal pump and go from there.

Thanks! Finally got around to trying that and you were spot on. Washer motor acts the same with the switch bypass. This is the second one I bought from Classic Parts. Do you know of a better replacement?

Re: Wiper washer motor or switch?

Not having seen your pump I am assuming it is similar to a 84 to 89 Camaro washer pump. I know NAPA has them and I believe GM still makes them.
