replacing leaky old valve cover gaskets.
Along the lines of my earlier post, do you guys use any permatex or other stuff when you replace your old cork valve cover gaskets?

I clean the cover and straighten it. Clean the head. Then I glue the gasket to the cover and let it set up. Then, cover on, and don't overtighten. And I don't use cork, I use the better composite gaskets now.

I like Permatex Aviation non hardening sealer, it's much easier to clean off than silicone

I'm routinely vexed with leaky perimiter bolt valvecovers. Last time I bought the extra thick cork ones and put Permatex black on both sides. Everything was clean I really did it right but they still leak a little. I believe chevy switched to the centebolt ones for good reason.

I agree with Getter-Done, the bolt hole spreaders are the way to go.
Sadly I have used the GM ones that are hardened and you couldn't bend them with a small hammer. I have also used the imports that I could bend, at the bolt hole, with my fingers. I am unsure if you can even purchase the GM them any more but the least expensive spreaders are not the ones you want. At least you know how to tell the difference. Cheers. |

I bought Summit Racing valve cover gaskets that are black rubber with some kind of metal inside, you can reuse them and don’t use any sealant.
