8 lug axles on a 1/2 ton
Hey guys,
There’s a truck for sale that I’m pretty certain is a half ton, yet it has 8 lug rims front and rear. It’s a 1960. Seller sent me the tag photos, vin is OC154O######, which is a long bed 1/2 ton truck built in Oakland, correct? And the GVWR tag reads 5200lbs max. But it’s got 8 lug axles. Seller is not sure what’s up. It’s kind of a long drive from me and I’ve yet to see it on the flesh. What do you guys think? Thanks! Oh I asked him if he thought it had a 4.57 rear end and he was unsure. I think it would be obvious to most folks if it was geared that low, so I doubt it is. It’s my understanding that most of the 3/4 tons those years had 4.57s. Am I correct? Posted via Mobile Device Last edited by Tpo; 03-23-2023 at 01:48 AM. |

Could be an axle swap? If you could post pictures I bet people here could identify it rather quickly.

It most likely was a C20 that had a C10 cab put on it.

I don’t have any good pix of the axles yet, just the wheels.
Hmm, I hadn’t thought of a cab swap. There should be vin stamped on the frame somewhere by the drivers side motor mount, correct? I’ll see if I can get him to send me that. Thanks! Posted via Mobile Device |

Another clue would be the rear springs. Likely to be 1/2 ton if an axle swap was done
That being said I'm voting cab swap. You might reach out and see if another member lives near the truck and can look at it.

I’m afraid if I tell anyone else about it they will buy it!
Are 3/4 ton coil springs noticeably thicker than the 1/2? I could measure them easily enough if/when I see it. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: 8 lug axles on a 1/2 ton
Not sure on the springs but the 3/4 ton trailing arms have reinforcing plates that the 1/2 tons don't have.
