Ho33 HO35 HO52 HO72 Eaton ot Chevrolet axles ?
Here’s some info on Chevrolet truck rear axles and who and where they were made . If you read these pages completely, you will notice Eaton did not make the HO52 or HO72 rear axles nor did they make the NoSpin Detroit locker .They were made by Chevrolet Gear and Axle. This also applies to 1960-1962 HO33 and HO35 axles for 1/2 ton . Eaton did offer a limited slip posi unit in 10 series only trucks. Other Posi units in our trucks were offered by Dana.
This Chevrolet information is from 1966 but applies to 60-66 as far as where all axles were built. Eaton did supply GM with some 60 or 70 series and up axles but not 10-30 series. Use the Suffix Source column to identify where it was made ; G=Chevrolet gear and axle also known as Detroit gear and axle W= Warren Mi B=Buffalo NY In the White pages under Make , notice where the difference is from Chev to Eaton. These letters will be stamped in your housing by the axle identification code but not till 1966 did the put the code into the carrier on the HO52 and HO72. "In 2005, powertrain giant Eaton Corp. purchased Detroit Locker’s parent company and greatly expanded the offerings."

Re: Ho33 HO35 HO52 HO72 Eaton ot Chevrolet axles ?
"A Little Locker History
The Detroit Locker was initially called a “Thornton NoSPIN Differential.” Ray Thornton patented it in 1941 as device for use in six wheel (tandem drive) truck applications. The NoSPIN was manufactured by the Detroit Automotive Product Corporation and was used on American military vehicles during World War II. After the war and into the 1960s, the Thornton NoSPIN was original equipment on light and medium duty trucks. That’s right about when it got the Detroit Locker nickname—and when racers and high performance enthusiasts started to take an interest in it. They used the Detroit Locker on everything from road racers to NASCAR roundy-rounders and land speed record cars. In the late 1960s, some Ford performance cars had the Detroit Locker as a factory option. And to no one’s surprise, the Detroit Locker was found in cars at virtually every drag strip in the nation."https://www.onallcylinders.com/.../detroit-locker.../

1966 HO52 in a 1966 C20 with the "G" stamped on top of the center section denotes Chevrolet Gear and Axle.

Re: Ho33 HO35 HO52 HO72 Eaton ot Chevrolet axles ?
Impressive research on the manufacturing of these axles Jon! Thanks for your post! We pretty much assumed anything that had the drop out style axle was an Eaton. My biggest pet peeve was the ratio coverage in the '60-'66 era. Where was the 3.40-3.50 for C 10's back in the day? Where was the 3.73 for C 20's back in the day? Where was the 4.11 for C 30's? I realize the powerplants were relatively small, but GMC saw the light and did have a Dana 3.54 for there 1/2 tons. These trucks could have been better tailored thru a larger option list to meet the needs of the individual buyer.

Re: Ho33 HO35 HO52 HO72 Eaton ot Chevrolet axles ?
Thank you Factorystock . I think Chevrolet got the gears right based on the torque of the little sixes in C10s . C20s I really feel they over did it. 3:73 or 4:11 might have been better. GMCs V6 had no issue pulling the 3:54s . I recently put a 3:42 gear in a 63 Chevy C10 and its a dog with the 283 , in my opinion. I'm just trying to show these are Corporate axles made by Chevrolet , helps to see and understand the history better with these documents.
