Correct temperature sensor to use with stock gauges

Afternoon all,

I have a LM7 in my 66 C10 and would like to use the stock temperature gauge.

Currently I have an Autometer sender screwed in the back of the passenger head but, when connected to the gauge, it is not registering.

Sure somebody has already done this so if you could share your experience would be grateful.

I think its for a 98 camaro, make sure you look at the pics its the small threaded unit.

Yep, what norville said. The Camaro sensor is definitely the way to go. Just add the correct pigtail to your engine harness and run the sender wire back to your gauge. I used sensor TX111 and pigtail HP4440, both made by Standard Motor Products.

clay68c10 does a nice job and goes into more detail and demonstrates how this sensor works with the stock gauge here.

Here's my sensor and pigtail installed in the stock 5.3 sensor location.

You've either got a bad sender or a bad gauge .. or the wrong sender for your gauge..
mine is in pass head and works just fine

Thanks for the response so far.

For clarity, the sensor that feeds back to the ECU is fine.

I want to make the temp gauge in the dash function.

@Mongo will check the gauge again but it was working when I put the dash together. The Autometer sender is new so my thinking was does the dash gauge require a specific 'type' of sensor? - Hence the question.

Working away for the next few days so will check the gauge when I get home.

i used the stock sender with the factory gauge ....it worked fine, but i upgraded to mechanical gauges now
did you use the autometer because its metric.?.( im not sure) ..
i drilled and tapped the pass head to npt allowing me to use those instead of tracking down metric fittings

I used a sending unit from Stewart Warner. It screwed perfectly into the head and the gauge read correctly.

does the 66 have the same resistance and connector as the 67? if so i went with this one in my swap, reads perfect. i tapped the passenger side head and used one i got from rock auto (said it was original for a 67)...but it read too hot. i was referred to this one and it seemed to work

Not sure. Can anybody confirm if the resistance is the same?

@Mongo - The engine came with the Autometer adapter already installed in the back of the passenger head.

@Joyridin - Will check the Stewart Warner sender and see if they list the resistance.

Back home after a week on the road so hope to get some shed time over the weekend, will report on my findings.

Do you know if the autometer sender is for a idiot light or a gauge?..was doing some reading and it seems they are different ..
If you have a spare gauge, maybe a buddy has one, you could hook directly to the sender and see if it reads..
If you still have your old temp sender, what I'd do is put that in ..and run with it
