One person windshield install - Is it possible?

I am ready to install the windshield in my build and have watched all the videos etc, they all say have someone help. Well, I don't have too many dependable helpers to call on right now, do you think I can do it myself? Has anyone done it alone and can give some tips? Thanks!

Installed the windshield in my 72 myself. Even with the 72 shallow stainless trim many avoid. My dad was a glazier so I have some knowledge and proper tools. Having someone help set it in place is helpful. My wife is still willing to help with that. Pump up suction cups make install much easier as you can pull on glass from inside by yourself to seat gasket. Several are available on Amazon or Ebay. Makes easier to set glass in place as well. A hook tool is good to work gasket into place. Was a couple hours when I did mine, took my time. Personally, would wait for exterior paint before glass installation. I'll gladly pay a glass shop to do it..they install them solo all the time..

Even my glass place sends two guys. One pushing outside, one pulling inside.

Cool, thanks for the info.. I've read thru some older posts on here and a couple of guys were able to get it done with some suction cups in the inside and lots of lube I'm gonna give it a go, I think it can be done w/ soem patience and time.

I've done several '64-'66 windshields and avoid the solo route- too easy to risk cracking. Your helper doesn't need to be muscle-bound, just patient. Even with two it's a slow process.

I installed the weatherstrip to the windshield the day before. When it came out of the shipping box it was kinked in places. Having it sit overnight seemed to help it relax and fit to the glass better. Sitting it out in the sun a while would do the same thing.

Be careful with the metal hook tool- I nicked an edge once and it later spawned a crack. I use a plastic stick as much as possible, but the hook will be needed at times.

I have used Harbor Freight suction cups and they worked ok. Get at least two.

Lastly, lube helps a lot. Very soapy water seems best, like what they use to mount tires. I have seen people use grease and that's bad. You will never get it cleaned up later.

The secret is a good quality gasket. I had a glass man put mine in. He said the cheap gaskets from the China stores are hard to work with. A good one from a rubber supplier costs 2-3 times as much but is well worth it.
If you use a glass shop find one with an old timer. The younger guys are not experienced in that type installation. A lot of shops won't take the job. Or if they do they will not be responsible if they break it.

Just to add to all the above about all the tools, is give yourself a lot of space to move around the truck and open both doors and give yourself a lot of time, I just did this alone on a square body and it wasn't easy but rewarding in the end.

I had my front and rear glass replaced recently covered under insurance from vandalism.

The 2 pros got the big rear window in but struggled with windshield using my premium gasket I bought from Steele Rubber products, it was late afternoon when they started and got dark on a Friday, they had to come back Monday and brought a 3rd guy to sit inside cab and pull the rope.

With 3 people it went quick.

I watched the "experienced pro" break 5 windshields ,all on their dime, trying to get one in my 81..
I'll gladly pay to have it done

I have done it by myself. It is easier with two people though. Just take your time and I use silicone spray which helps

Have seen it done a few time s with vehicle s
They took their time and did nt apply to much pressure in area a in avoiding cracking the glass
.
Lubricant or grease will help ( or find additional methods at how it was done bavk in the day which made it easy for them )
Educating yourself before hand goes a long way , imo
.

I did the one in my 80 myself. Took it out of an 81 and put it in my 80. Lots of dawn dish soap and patience. Worked out well.
