Might not be the ideal yardstick for "normal." 4" through the frame, on a stepside:

the pictures are the best I have. I ran the on the outside of the frame and dumped them out in front of the rear wheel. I thought they would hag too low if they ran under the frame. I did install insulation between the mufflers and the floorboards (not in these pictures).
