alternator questions
OK, my batttery is toast, stick a fork in it. It barely makes 11 volts while driving. Idling at stoplights it falls down around 9 volts. How can i check my alternator to see if it is also going south? I know its getting heavy use because of the terminal battery that is running lights, radio, and windshield wipers.
This leads to my next question. Shortly after starting it, there is this god awful ghostly sounding whail coming from the passenger side of the truck. And after i turn the truck off, there is a fast tick tick tick noise coming from the same area that slowly dies away. I honestly don't know exactly where the alternator is, but since the battery is on the right, im assuming the alternator is over there too. The belt worn maybe? Pully worn? Any ideas are welcome. Cliff

take your volt meter and measure at the back of the alt. It should read 13.5 volts +/-

should be ~60 bucks... they can also check it for you. dont install your new alt with a dead battery.. you may get away with it, but you run the chance of burning the alt up. do you have a hydrometer to test the battery cells?

nah i don't but the battery is my mom's van died a few months ago and we changed both the van's and the truck's near the same time. AAMOF, the warranty stuff is crammed in the ghetto fied garbage that is holding the battery in, but i think the 3 year warranty is expired
My mom said we will order battery tray, hanger, clamp, etc Monday and hopefully get it end of the week / beggining of next. I checked Autozone, and its like 30-40 bucks for a 63 amp, 40+ for 100 amp, which isn't bad, so ill check the alternator tomorrow after school and go from there.

My truck did the same thing and I ended up replacing the alternator and battery because the alt had fried the battery. It would charge fine, then I noticed at lights and stop signs the volt meter would drop to around 9 volts. I paid 49.99 at autozone for my 1year warranty 94 amp alternator. That was minus the core charge because I had it in my hands when I went in the door

OK i checked the alternator by first getting voltage from the battery with motor off (12 volts cause it had just been on a couple hours before, as it is so dead it probably wouldn't make any), then i started it up, and checked the volts on the battery again and it was up at 14.6 ish where it should be, so i have ruled the alternator out. Last night i ordered entire battery tray assembly and such, and some other goodies Ill make a new thread about the other goodies tonight.
