Mineral spirits is what I usually use I drive about 90,000 klicks a year so I get lots of tar. I usually have a gallon of mineral spirits around . It's good for removing tar, cleaning greasy grime off parts, cleaning greasy grime of hands, cleaning oil based paints ( the stuff I buy is usually labeld as " Paint Thinner" in hardware stores). Best of all, it's not flamable. Good luck to ya, whatever you use.
