Hey now, there are plenty of good Fords out there... most of them don't have a check engine light tho What car is the one you're working on? The CEL can come on for many reasons, loss of signal from a sensor is one of them - since it's been overheated, have you guys looked into the coolant temp sensors, particularly the one that feeds the PCM? Also in many of the '80s V8-equipped vehicles the light will come on when the oil level or pressure is down, believe that feature was retained in the newer models too - both of these will throw you a code usually right about never...
