starter troubles...

what are some reasons for a starter to short and continue running after turning the ignition off?

this happened to me a few weeks ago and caused the battery wires to heat up... the positive wire got so hot it started smoking and melted the terminal right out of the battery! thought i was gonna have a fire, and i was pissed, too, cuzz it was a relatively new battery...

thanks
