mating the th350 adapter to a 700r4-doesn't quite fit

when I mate these two together, the adapter doesn't fit snugly into the 700r4. there is roughly an 1/8"-1/4" even space all the way around. I have the o-ring for it, but its not THAT thick. seems like the adapter is bottoming out on the inside of the tranny (part of the tranny).

has anyone else had that problem? trans was out of an 89 GMC van-but from what I've read it shouldn't be a problem. Will I have to do some grinding? if so, on what-the inside of the trans or the adapter?
thanks, Paul
