Lower tailgate trim Q

I bought some woodgrain trim tape for my '72's tailgait trim( the trim is very strait and in GOOD shape except almost ALL of the woodgrain is gone). I took off the trim this eve. and found that the letters (CHEVROLET) are riveted on, I don't know why I thought the letters were attached with nuts or something like that?!!!!!!
How do I go about refinishing my trim? Is there a way to reattach the letters or should I buy new letters and just drill out the old letters? I'd rather NOT buy a new trim piece if I can avoid it.
