Carb spacer purpose?

Don't know when the last time I changed it was, but the gasket between the carb and the spacer is leaking.

What advantages do I have with the spacer? I have a Holley 600 on an Edlebrock intake on a stock 350. It's a daily driver. Would it hurt to remove it? I'd have to check and make sure the throttle and choke don't hit the intake, but other than that, is there an adv/disadv?

Thanks for the info!
