Mainly look for adapters like everyone else said, but really you can put 134a right into an R-12 system without evacuating it.
My system was so empty it didn't even make a sound when I opened the schrader valves, and had to hard-wire the compressor to make it start pushing freon until it started pulling on its own. No matter what refrigerant, it will run constantly except when you're using the defrost or in some instances, depending on the compressor, when the fan is turned down. As for how cold it is, it's not the greatest at low speeds, but when you're constantly moving above 30 it'll freeze your foot off. I recommend putting a can of oil/stop-leak in it too, just in case.
