Foam used to center molding clips?

I have a piece of chrome molding that has come off and I purchased the necessary clips, as they were worn and the reason why the molding wouldn't stay. I noticed there was a foam type molding that helped keep the clips centered into the punched out hole. What was used or what would be good enough to use in order to keep the clips centered?
