Tips for getting LS engine into '53 GMC engine compartment
I have a '53 GMC cab and nose that I will be mounting on a running 2006 Chevy 3500 chassis to use as my daily driver and work truck,using it an average of 400 miles per week.
I have some pretty decent fabrication skills and equipment,even access to a CNC if I provide sexual favors. I am trying to prepare myself for what it takes to get this engine,a 6.0 Vortec(LQ4) with 4L80e into this '53 engine bay.I don't have anything chassis or drive train wise from the '53.It is from a 2-ton GMC. I know this is a pretty common engine swap now,but I am putting the cab on a rotisserie and want to make the cab modifications while it is on there.Cab is in very good condition,I have some floor repairs to do.I would like to mount the cab about as tight as the 2006 cab is to the chassis,I would prefer not to body-lift the cab too much.Want to know how much of a tranny hump I will need in the cab if possible. Yes,I know I will have to contend with steering clearance issues,and I am thinking that is something that will come toward the end when everything else is in place. Are custom headers a must to get the LS engine in this '53 engine compartment? Can I run anything similar to the stock air filter?Radiator/cooling suggestions? Thank you for the help. |
