sill plates

did all trucks of any trim level come with sill plates? my truck had no sill plates when i disassembled it (not factory carpet), now i am getting ready to install new carpet and was wondering if i could put them in, or could i get away with using no sill plates, and on that note what would hold down the carpet on the edges? my old carpet was glued down, but i am assuming that is not the correct way to do it
