1949 sub 12 volt conversion?????

Hey gang, I'm new to this section of the forum as I spend most of my time in the 67-72 trucks area. I recently purchased a 49 suburban from eBay and had it delivered to my inlaws for storage and am going to take a look at it for the first time in a couple weeks. The previous owner had the truck a few years but never attempted to get it running. It was supposedly running a few years ago when he bought it. There is no battery in it and I want to try and get it to at least run while I am there but the previous owner doesn't know if it was converted to 12 volt or if it is still 6 volt. Is there any way to tell so I know what type of battery to bring with me? Does it matter if I use a 12 volt to get it running or am I asking for trouble?
